New generations, more information and more knowledge are creating and changing the way the enterprises are hiring and holding their work force. Companies are suffering and facing a constant desertion and rotation of their employees, people are not seeing their job as an anchor where they will be attached forever. For this reason, the enterprises are doing investments that they didn´t do before to hold their people in their work force. An economic remuneration is not enough anymore, workers are looking for something else to satisfy their need for professional and personal growth. These new challenges are something for which companies were not prepared and my personal opinion is that they are not doing enough to face it.
The companies have to return to their core values, they need to remember that in some part of their history they made mistakes and they were not perfect. They forgot about the most important asset in the world, people. They believe that they are hiring machines and can get rid of them easily, like a plastic bag. It is unforgivable the hypocrisy that most powerful companies show to their employees. They are always mentioning that people are the “heart of everything they do”. I have seen a lot of layoffs during the past three years. No matter if they are fair or not, at the end the managers are the first ones to show their back and abandon them to their luck.
Companies are unable to select people with a high potential or to prepare their employees to be better technically and professionally. The selection process is oriented to look and have people with professional degrees or honorific mentions; a title is not a guarantee of success or great potential. The strategy should be focused on developing a correct hiring and development plan. Once the employee is on the payroll is exposed to many low quality courses. Companies are not able to rate the impact level these courses have, because they have not paid the needed attention to deploy a proper professional plan.
Companies which are not prepare to make these changes will be destined to death. The desertion of their workers is growing year after year and will be part of the work environment. People is leaving their jobs because they want new challenges, so if companies want to have competitive teams, they have to make big sacrifices to offer the best they have with professional growth plans. Individuals need a specific plan which will make them face new challenges and development. Over all, this plan has to prepare companies to be ready to let their people leave at any moment.
